Composing For Impact

Composing For Impact

In digital photography, how you compose photos controls how much impact they have on your viewers. Use the following tips to create the maximum viewer response.

Rule of Thirds

Ancient Greek painters discovered the rule of thirds, also known as the golden grid. The rule says to mentally divide the scene in your viewfinder into thirds both horizontally and vertically, like a tic-tac-toe grid. If your main point of interest in your digital camera's viewfinder is a static spot, place it on one of the intersecting points. For long horizontal subjects, such as a road or fence line, place it along one of the horizontal lines. Place long vertical subjects, such as a tree, along one of the vertical lines.

Just using this technique by itself gives your photos more impact, but try these other compositional considerations for even more impact:

Framing
Depth
Focus
Viewpoint
Lightness
Color

Framing

Framing draws the eyes of your viewers into the photo and right to your subject. Once you start looking for items to use as frames, you will see them all around you. Frames can be natural or man-made. Tree branches, doorways, and windows are three popular ones. When first using framing, many photographers place their subject too far away from the frame. When this happens, the subject appears too small inside the frame thereby losing the impact of the framing.

Depth

The illusion of depth occurs when there is a noticeable distance between the foreground and background. Depth draws your viewers into the photo. When two items of the same approximate size appear to be different in size, the eye interprets the smaller one as being farther away from the larger one. Atmospheric haze or light fog between the larger and smaller objects contributes to the illusion by making the smaller object appear further away.

Focus

The eyes of your viewers go naturally to the object in focus in a photo and you can use this phenomenon to your advantage by using selective focusing. Making your subject appear in focus and the rest of your photo slightly out-of-focus occurs by using a small f-stop number such as f4 or f2.8.

Viewpoint

Viewpoint is the perspective or the physical placement of your camera at the time a photo is taken. Before taking a picture, look around and try other viewpoints through your viewfinder. Try shooting from a position higher than the subject, a position lower and finally, from a different lateral or side-to-side position. See how these perspectives change the way your subject appears in the viewfinder. Digital cameras are great for experimenting with different perspectives as you can take photos from several different perspectives and instantly see the photos. Then you can keep the one(s) you like and delete the others.

Lightness

The lightness of a photo greatly contributes to the feeling of that photo. A photo having a very light tonal range, known as high-key, conveys a feeling of youth, hope, beauty, or softness. Often, you will see a beautiful young girl or a flower portrayed in a high key setting. Conversely, low-key photos imply seriousness, sobriety, age or impending danger. A photo of an impending storm conveys the feeling of danger.

Color

In a photo, color serves two purposes. It sets the mood of the photo and enables us to distinguish the different elements in a photo. The more a color of an object contrasts with its surroundings, the more likely that object will become the subject of the photo. Location photographers use very colorful props when photographing people as it identifies the people as the subject and separates them from the rest of the photo. Conversely, a photo with a uniform or non-contrasting color conveys a different mood. A photo having a bluish cast conveys a feeling of coldness while a reddish color conveys the feeling of hotness, endangerment or adventure.

Experiment with these compositional factors the next time you shoot photos with your digital camera. The more visually aware you become of these factors when composing photos, the more impact your photos will have on your viewers.

Exploring Changing States of Matter With Time Lapse Photography in Elementary School

The idea behind "time lapse photography" is take a series of images or short segments of video over a set interval of time. Combine these images together to make a slow event happen faster, or a fast event happen slower.

One fun way to watch a solid turn to a liquid is to build a miniature snowman in a pan, set up a camera, and begin taking regular photos throughout the melting of the snowman. With a miniature snowman it only takes about an hour or so to completely melt.

If you don't have snow to build a miniature snowman, you can do this same activity with a couple ice cubes or a bowl of ice cream or a popsicle.

This activity works best if you have a tripod to put the camera on so there isn't movement.

There are also video cameras that have a time lapse mode. This is the simplest way to do this. You plug in the camera, set the time mode, and then come back later to see the results.

Once the snowman has melted, import the photos or short video clips into a movie software program. Then have children voice over with descriptions of what is happening in the state of matter change. Or, for a more creative twist, document what the snowman is thinking during the melting process!

To show the liquid changing to a gas you can set up the camera along with a hot plate. Put a shallow pan of water on the hot plate. With this you will want to take photos at a faster rate, such as one per minute. Then you will capture the water begin to boil, the steam rising, and then the pan emptying. Be careful at the end as the empty pan will begin to burn!

You can use one set of clips for the whole class and then have the students work in teams of two to add the voice documenting the experience. It is interesting to see how different the movies can be with everyone starting with the same footage.

States of matter become much more interesting when students can teach others and document the changes through time lapse photography.

White Balance For Digital SLR Cameras in Plain English

The most common question I am asked is how to properly set white balance on digital cameras. This is a new phenomenon relating to digital cameras and was not an issue with film cameras. In this article I hope to take the mystery out of these settings and to show you how to use this feature to optimize your photographs.

The definition of white balance is:

A camera setting that compensates for the differences in color temperature of the surrounding light. In digital cameras this setting must be adjusted to ensure that all colors in the scene will be represented faithfully. It can be adjusted automatically by the camera or manually, by selecting presets (tungsten, fluorescent, etc.) or by aiming the lens at a totally white surface (the white card) and selecting custom white balance. Source: PC Magazine

A camera will set its color values (red, green and blue) based on its value of white. Changes in color temperature can cause color casts unless a white balance is set. Beginner and amateur photographers can overlook this feature because of their lack of knowledge in evaluating proper color. Building this skill will require some practice. To achieve the best results in correct color you will need to shoot a lot of comparisons so you begin to educate yourself on the differences in cool light vs. warm light and various other types of light.

There are three ways to set white balance in your camera. This is when you will need to have your manual handy.

1) Automatic - AWB on most cameras. This setting will work most of the time but will produce average results. Photographs in the shade will have a slight bluish cast. The bluish cast may look normal to you until you see the difference between a custom white balance vs. a AWB. You may also see color casts from photographs taken indoors with mixed fluorescent and tungsten lighting. Again, once you see the differences in photos using the custom setting vs. AWB you will probably not use this setting anymore.

2) Manual - you can set the white balance manually to suit the respective light source. The following modes are found on most digital SLRs:

• Daylight - sun symbol
• Shade - house casting a shadow symbol
• Cloudy, twilight, sunset - cloud symbol
• Tungsten light - light bulb symbol
• White fluorescent light - fluorescent tube symbol
• Flash - lightning bolt symbol

3) Custom - the symbol is usually two triangles and a dot. This setting lets you manually set your white balance for better accuracy. You will need to check your camera manual to find out the correct steps. In the Canon cameras it is quite simple:

1. Photograph a white object (usually white foam core or a special digital calibration target).
2. Select "custom white balance."
3. Select "set."
4. Select the image captured in step one and select "set"
5. Turn the dial to the custom w.b. symbol.

The custom setting can be very effective, however it can be cumbersome if you are working outdoors in changing light conditions. If you are working in consistent lighting conditions (sun, shade and cloudy bright) I highly recommend it. You will need to test the various methods and see what works for you.

Another option is to select raw (vs. jpeg) where you can set your own w.b. settings in post-production. Stay tuned for an upcoming article on shooting raw in your digital SLR camera.

Adding the Third Dimension to Photos

When you mention 3-D pictures to people the first thing that comes into people's mind are the neat little gimmick photos that companies will sometimes put out that can look three dimensional if you turn them in one particular way or another. But there is so much more to the idea behind a 3-D picture than just some gimmick you got in a pack of baseball cards that lend the idea of 3-D pictures to possibly saving people's lives or at least offering a view of the surface of a planet that we may want to some day visit.

The best example of practical 3-D pictures comes in the form of creative three-dimensional images used on street corners or even in businesses. The idea behind a 3-D picture is to give the illusion of the picture having depth which is the third dimension missing in a two dimensional image. That depth is what can give the person the false impression that they can reach inside of the picture and pull something out of it. It is not easy to make a 3-D picture but if you search the internet you will find that there are artists all over the world that have developed a talent for creating art on the sidewalks and streets, in many cases simply with chalk, that looks three dimensional. Some of it is so realistic that many people avoid walking on the images because they are so adept at giving the illusion of having three dimensions.

Looking around the Internet you will find photos of people doing 3-D pictures in the streets all over the world. These drawings can range from chalk drawings of holes in the sidewalk that seem to lead to a bottomless pit to creating the illusion that something is rising up out of the sidewalk and trying to reach the surface. The reactions to these types of sidewalk drawings are always reactions of either terror or amazement. There are videos of people walking down the street and then panicking when they step on a drawing because, for a split second, they think they have stepped into a bottomless pit. The effects these drawings create when photographed definitely give the illusion of depth and are interesting works of art.

That leads us to the practical application of 3-D pictures. There is a photo circulating the Internet of a company's cigarette break room that has a 3-D picture painted in the floor and the ceiling. The floor picture is of an open grave and the ceiling picture is the view of the sky, and the mourners looking into the grave, that you would see if you were lying in the casket. The images are powerful but they serve a purpose beyond shock value. Cigarette smoking related disease causes a strain on health insurance costs and if a room like that can get people to quit smoking then the company saves money on health insurance and it also helps to save an employee's life.

The use of 3-D pictures can range from the chalk drawings on the street to 3-D pictures of the terrain of a foreign planet that may help us navigate that planet some day. It is safe to say that the world of 3-D pictures is just starting to evolve and their usefulness is limitless.

The Wedding Photographer

The Wedding Photographer
By Michael Mize Russell

Your wedding day is one of the milestones in your life that will become a defining point in your personal history. Memories of a wonderful wedding day can last forever. A really good wedding photographer provides you with a record of that special day that you can share with family and friends and it is worth having a consummate professional handle the photography on a day that cannot be repeated and must, therefore, be captured perfectly as it unfolds.

There is no need to offend any well-intentioned friend who offers to 'save you the cost of a photographer' by coming along with their camera. You can say that the more pictures that are taken of the day the better and you'd love your friend to capture informal pictures of all the guests who are usually left out of the formal shots or suggest that you want all your guests to relax and enjoy the day with you and let others do the work.

The formal groups that used to be the only product of wedding photography in former times are still part of a wedding album today but a first-class wedding photographer will capture special moments before, during and after the ceremony that will bring a smile to your face many years after the event. If your wedding is to take place in Surrey or South West London, you may be fortunate enough to be able to hire Kat Hannon, one of Britain's leading wedding photographers, to 'do' your special day!

Why Use A Professional Wedding Photographer?

Equipment
Digital cameras are great but cameras designed to allow amateurs to take snapshots will not produce the results that professionals can obtain with their equipment. Apart from anything else, having a selection of different lenses allows a professional to get shots that someone with a single-lens apparatus cannot hope to obtain.

Locations
One of the big differences between an amateur photographer and a professional is the ability to instantly see the 'whole' picture when taking a photograph and know how it will turn out, the result of training and experience. A professional wedding photographer has an eye for background, light and shade, colour and suitability and knows the best places to get the best results.

Choosing The Right Moments
Unlike most photo shoots, a wedding doesn't allow for endless re-takes - a wedding photographer cannot shout "Cut!" and have events repeated until the shot comes out right! That is why it is so important to have a professional capture the day - knowing just when to take pictures and, equally, when not to... There are many little moments leading up the the wedding itself, just afterwards and during the reception that make for wonderful additions to a really good wedding album - who better to capture those moments than a wedding photographer who is also experienced in reportage? Nothing beats experience when it comes to getting it right first time every time and you are fortunate in having a Surrey wedding photographer who has that experience and can show you an example of what can be done to ensure that you always look back on your wedding with pleasure and that future generations will also admire the results.

Michael Russell writes for wedding photographer in Surrey - which is partly in south west London. View his work at http://www.kh-wedding-photographer.com and you will get the picture straight away!

Top 5 Ways to Use a Digital Photo Album

Top 5 Ways to Use a Digital Photo Album

Digital photo albums are a great way to not only store photos but share them with people through the internet who may be in the next town or halfway around the world. There are many other uses for your digital photo album, as well. Consider these top five ways to use your digital photo album:

Reason #1: Backup your Computer

You may have hundreds, if not thousands, of digital photos saved on the hard drive of your computer. But have you considered what may happen to those digital photos if your computer were to crash, or if your hard drive were to become disabled in any way? Don't play Russian roulette with the photographs that you have so lovingly taken. Instead, back up all of your photography with your digital photo album. You can set the rights on your digital photo album to keep some of your photos just for yourself while sharing other photos with friends and family.

Reason #2: Show Off Your Family

You have gorgeous kids who are capable of wonderful feats, all of which you've captured with your digital camera. Now, you just need to find a way to share those pictures with your friends and family near and far. What better way than by uploading your photos to your digital photo album and using its sharing capabilities to invite your loved ones to come and view.

Reason #3: Recreate an Event

Consider this: you've had a family party, but your favorite aunt was unable to attend. Or, your company has hosted a terrific get together, but your boss was out of town and had to miss it. Whatever the reason, you can use your digital photo album as a way to post pictures from an event so that those who were unable to attend can see what happened and how well everything went. You can even use your description boxes as a narrative of the event.

Reason #4: Tell a Story

Digital photo albums do not have to be just a way to electronically store random photographs from a mishmash of events. Instead, by strategically choosing photographs to include in a particular digital photo album, you can turn them into a story. Want to put together a story on your college years to share with all of your old buddies? Simply upload photos, put them in order, and write a story to go along with them.

Reason #5: Documentation

There are times when photographic documentation can be very helpful. Whether you want to document an event simply for your own fun and memories, or you will need photographic documentations to prove how something happened, you can use your digital photo album as a way to store these pictures and have them available whenever you need them or for whomever else may need them. This can be useful for legal cases, work projects, or simply for fun, documenting sports wins or other triumphs.

MJ Johnston writes for a variety of websites, including Hoorray, a photo sharing site that offers the quickest and easiest way to create a free online photo album.

To Save NIKON D70 - Sometimes it is Possible

To Save NIKON D70 - Sometimes it is Possible

People, who go in for underwater photography, should be extremely careful and follow the technique of preparing the underwater photographic equipment to diving precisely. It is necessary to be alert during the first moments of diving with a camera as well as during the whole diving period. The photographer should exercise vigilance even after the diving period is finished, after coming aboard (ashore), soaking the camera in fresh water and opening&

But sometimes the situations occur, when water leaks into the box for any reason; in such situation you watch in horror as the bubbles come from the box and the box begins to fill with water (sometimes it happens even without bubbles).

Now the important moment comes, when you should act quickly and accurately in hope to save expensive equipment. Diver Sh., while preparing to dive with NIKON D-70 camera in box, did not notice that the tightening ring was a bit popped out of the groove.

NB: widely spread error, in my opinion, is to apply excessive silicon lubricant to main end tightening ring of the box connector. The less amount of lubricant you apply, the better it is for reliable air-tightness. Ring with lubrication can retain various small dirt and fur particles; besides, it has a tendency to slip out of tightening groove. Privately I avoid lubricating tightening end ring; I just keep the groove and the ring clean. Lubrication is necessary only for flexible joints, to assembly works, where the tightening is of radial type.

While diving in shallow waters, our photographer noticed leakage of water into the box and aborted the submersion immediately; holding the box strictly with the bottom downwards, he came aboard and opened the box quickly and carefully. At that moment the photographer noticed incorrect position of the tightening end ring.

The camera was covered with sea water for 10-15 mm as for the bottom. Power element (powerful lithium-ion battery) and flash card were removed immediately. After that the camera was just dried directly in warm place. After a couple of days the battery was placed into the camera and the camera seemed to come alive again. But after a very short time it apparently accumulated moisture and failed. It was apparent that the accident did not turn out well&

After coming back to Moscow the camera was given to the author of this article with the request to repair and to restore it somehow. Though the photographer nearly reconciled himself to the thought that the camera was dead! The call to the service photo center was approximately the following: Drown in sea water for 10-15mm oh, guys Yes! Two payments 200 dollars each, plus work, probably there is corrosion in mechanics, no! It's a waste of time! It's easier to buy a new camera! And that's that!

I decided to help my long-time friend and suggested the following variant: I'd try to save and repair the camera using my own methods, though there were no guaranties at all. But my friend agreed& So, the following measures were taken.

The screws along the perimeter of the bottom cover were unscrewed and the bottom cover was taken off. Cheerless view of corrosion and salting was unveiled see photos. The camera was put in the distilled water to the depth of 12mm and kept there for 5 hours; the operation was repeated 3 times with water changing.

The camera was taken out of water, shaken off, heated in a drying box up to + 50 degrees, and put into a vacuum chamber for 2 hours. The operation was repeated twice.

Electronic cards were cleaned in queer places with brush and spirit (medicinal rectification), the camera was put into vacuum chamber again for 2 hours. The surfaces of electronic cards were treated with special aerosol for cleaning and protecting electronic devices in automobiles.

The camera was heated up to + 50 degrees and put into a vacuum chamber for 2 hours see final photo. The battery and flash card were installed in the camera; then the camera was tested during 3 days we took photos indoors and outdoors, including wet conditions. The camera operates smoothly. So, sometimes it is possible to save photo cameras with sophisticated electronic devices, which were exposed to sea water for a while, if to act quickly and correctly.

Photography Business - 5 Ways Your Photo Business is Stealing From You & 5 Ways to Turn it Around

5 Places Your Business Could Be Stealing Money From You

1. Working On Your Website - Your computer is the brain of your photography business. It's used to do everything from prospecting to billing. Typically our website is the first interaction we have with the outside world and in order to keep it fresh and inviting it has to be maintained.

You can easily spend days updating photo galleries, testing links, adding mailing list capture forms to analyzing web stats and other time consuming tasks.

2. Answering Your Own Email - Nothing will rob you of billable hours than checking and answering emails. For many of us it's the first thing we do everyday. So you can imagine that it doesn't long before you realize that your whole day was shot reading, writing and sending emails.

3. Doing Your Own Photo Editing - Second to managing emails editing your own photos will definitely suck up an indefinite number of hours that you could be spent on income producing projects or prospecting new business.

4. Maintaining Your Blog - Blogging has become an invaluable tool for prospecting new business as well as maintaining relationships with current clients, vendors and prospects. You could spend hours setting up your blog, designing graphics, adding new posts, creating content and replying to posts.

5. Managing Your Own Mailing List & Following Up With Prospects - Whether it's direct mail or email we all need a list of prospects that we can correspond with a regular basis. But if you spending your day designing our own graphics to send to the printer, printing mailing labels, running to the post office to purchase stamps, setting up your own email newsletters, auto responders and such you won't have much time or energy to work on your business.

Now I realize that you may be thinking that all the things I listed above is working "on" your business, but I'm here to tell you they aren't. As a matter of fact if you haven't closed any business, or made any direct contacts for meetings, 'your' secretarial skills is not working for your photography business.

5 Ways to Turn Things Around So You Can Run A More Profitable Business

1. Stop Yourself Throughout The Day, Take Notice & Apply The Acid Test - The next time you're answering email for example, stop for a moment and ask yourself "Is this task actually making me money", in other words is this an income producing activity or could this be delegated to someone else?

2. Make A List Of Current Tasks - Go through your day and make a list of things that you blindly work on and apply the acid test to those tasks. Ask yourself, "could I hire someone to do this for me?"

3. Hire Help - Once you're clear on what you can delegate go about the process of hiring a personal assistant -or- sometimes referred to, as the Virtual Assistant is basically a personal assistant who doesn't actually report to your office. As a matter of fact they may not even live in the same city.

Virtual assistants can be hired for as little or as much time as you need, they are not staff employees so there are no records to maintain and you're not obligated to use them monthly. Only hire assistants, as you need.

4. Be Clear About What You Need & What You Expect - Any assistant is only as good as your ability clarify what you need from them.

5. Where To Locate A Virtual Assistant - You could advertise for help online via Craigslist.org if you wish to find someone locally. Or you could use an agency like AssistU.com and VANetworking.com.

Photography Business - Surviving in a Slow Economy - 3 Ways to Thrive in Your Photography Business

1. Create An Inviting Website - Did you know that you have hundreds if not thousands of eyeballs visiting your website monthly if not daily. But did you realize that money is leaking from your business because you have no system in place to capture those visitors? Nothing does this better than providing a form on the front page of your website that collects the name and email address of your site visitors.

You can accomplish this simply by using an email mailing list management service like Aweber at aweber(dot)com or Constant Contact located at constantcontact(dot)com that generates a simple line of html code that either you or web designer can add to the front page of your website.

Once you have the form installed on your site and tested it to make sure it's working properly simply ask your site visitors for their information. All you need to do is offer your would be subscribers something of value that relates to your service and addresses their reason for visiting your site and they'll have no reason not to give you their info.

For example, you could craft a series of short tip articles (see tip #3 for more info on how to do this) and combine them into a special report. Or you could be interviewed about your services and provide the audio recording in exchange for their email address.

2. Start An Ezine - Ezines or online newsletter as they are sometimes known is a fantastic tool for staying in contact with subscribers. With an ezine you can announce specials that you're offering, publish articles you've written, share information about awards you've received, or press clippings, you can provide quick informative tips and so much more. Both of the services suggested in step #1 offer pre-designed templates where you can place your new and information.

Once you format your ezine all you have to do is schedule it to be emailed to your subscribers. Ezines are a fast, efficient and affordable way to stay in contact with you customers.

3. Construct Tips Articles - Nothing markets your services better than information. People are being "sold" something everyday, now more than ever we want to know "who?" we are doing business with and nothing does this better than short digestible forms of information and a quick tips article achieves this perfectly. For example if you are a wedding photographer you can provide tips on how to prepare photographically for your special day, or if you specialize in portraits for the camera shy you can share tips on how you put people at ease in preparation for their shoot.

A tips article is really nothing more than a "to-do" list with bullet points under each item on the list with a sentence or two written about each bullet point. Add a compelling title at the beginning of the article and close with a brief paragraph (sometimes known as a resource box) directing readers where to go for additional information i.e. your webpage with a form to collect email addresses and you're done.

All three of these tools cost very little in terms of money but do require an investment of your time. But think of this way, if your business is experiencing a sluggish period of a result of this current economic climate you probably are finding yourself with more time on your hands anyway. Why not use it to set up systems that will market your photography business all year long?

And now I'd like to invite you to get instant access to my free 45 minute audio course and special report 5 Secrets To Running A Successful Photography Business That They Didn't Teach You In School when you visit http://photo-marketing-mentor.com/free

Photography Marketing - Blogging For Photographers 101 - How to Set Up Profit Generating Blog

Photography Marketing - Blogging For Photographers 101 - How to Set Up Profit Generating Blog

The Benefits To Blogging For Photographers:

1. Hosting your own blog will help to establish your expert status in the eyes of your readers and fans because you can offer many more ways to share your expertise.

2. You become more accessible. Artists already carry a certain mystique, so when you freely share not only what you do but how you do it with your blog visitors the veil is lifted and your readers will begin to connect you on a personal level.

3. You'll have a platform where you can demonstrate your expertise through a series of short tips articles just by posting them on your blog.

4. You can share photographs or even video clips from a recent shoot, highlighting some of the behind-the-scenes footage -or- images with your readers.

5. You can promote your other services like workshops and seminars you teach.

6. You'll over time begin to create a relationship with the "fans" of your blog who will gladly become subscribers to your list. Collecting the names and email addresses of your readers is as simple as adding a form to your blog that will collect this data.

7. Blogging regularly will help establish your credibility with readers and will help you create a list of interested prospects. Your list will lead to sales for your paid photography services because you now have permission to contact them over and over again with your information and offerings.

Blogging Platforms: There are a variety of platforms that you can use to set up your own Blog; two of the most popular is Blogger located at Blogger.com and Word Press, located at WordPress.com. The difference. Blogger is a totally free service provided by Google. You can literally have a blog up and running in less than 10 minutes.

Wordpress on the other hand offers is a relatively easy self-install software program that you host on a paid web hosting service. The only bill will be your monthly hosting fee; those typically run under $10 dollars a month.

Pros and Cons: While Blogger is a free service you are sort-of stuck using dot blogspot in your URL. Some experts feel that having the word blogspot in your URL is not considered professional enough for a business blog (I don't happen to agree) or that it suggests that you're not taking blogging seriously. Again I don't agree. Where I do agree is that Blogger doesn't offer as much flexibility in the design, look or feel of your blog.

Blogger provides you with a variety of pre-designed templates for you to select from, but the "risk" you run into is in your blog looking like someone's else's Blogger, blog. On the contrary Wordpress does offer you a multitude of choices in how your blog works, looks and feels.

The Secret to Better Flash Photos - Move Your Flash Off-Camera

If you are looking for a way to dramatically improve your flash photos, you need to move your flash unit away from your camera. This means you will need an external flash unit and a means to hold and trigger it off the camera.

Why should you go to the trouble and expense of using a remote flash when your camera most likely has a perfectly good built-in flash? Almost all cameras that feature a built-in or pop-up flash unit place the flash directly over or just to one side of the lens. Any professional photographer will tell you that is the worst place for the flash to be. This article will explain how you can use a remote flash to improve portraits of people, but most of the following will apply to any subject.

Consider the list of problems created by having your the flash inline or near the lens. First off, this is where red-eye originates. If the flash is fired from an area in close proximity to the lens, the chances of your subject displaying red-eye is increased substantially . Some cameras offer a red-eye reduction mode and you can usually fix the problem by editing your images with software. Neither of these solutions is ideal, however. The best fix for red-eye is to move the flash away from the axis of the lens. The further the flash is from the lens, the less chance that people and animals in your photos will exhibit red-eye.

The second problem with direct, on-camera flash is the harsh shadows it creates behind your subject. If you are outdoors or in a very large open room, you might be able to avoid this problem. If your subject is near a wall or a large upright object, direct flash will cause a shadow to appear just behind their head. The closer they are to the wall, the harsher the shadow will appear. This is annoying for subjects with light colored hair, but it is deadly for photos of brunettes. The shadow tends to merge with the dark hair to create a horrendous blob on top of the person's head. Once again, you can solve this problem with off-camera flash. If the flash unit is held high or to one side, you can cause any shadows to fall outside of the photo area.

Another short-coming of direct flash occurs when you are shooting someone with eye glasses. You fire that direct burst of light into the lenses of their glasses, which promptly reflect it right back to your camera. The result is a nice portrait of your subject with white streaks where there eyes should be. Moving the flash will allow you to aim it in such a way that the glasses show no reflections.

Direct flash can also cause your subject's skin to reflect light, causing bright hot spots on their cheeks or forehead. The fix is the same as that for eyeglasses; move the flash.

Finally, direct flash can cause a "deer-in-the-headlights" look on your subject's face. The flash wipes away all the natural shadows we are used to seeing on a person's face and leaves everything looking flat. Lighting experts know that side lighting exaggerates texture, while frontal lighting minimizes texture. You might want to tone down the texture in someone's face to a degree, but you don't want so much head-on light that eyes, nose, mouth and facial features appear flat.

All of these problems can be eliminated by simply moving the flash so it is not inline with the lens. How you accomplish this will vary with the type and brand of camera you are using. The easiest way is to use a flash bracket, which mounts a remote flash high and off to one side of the lens. You can also simply hold your camera with your right hand, while directing a remote flash with your left hand. Both of these solutions assume your camera has a PC port or hot-shoe that will allow you to use a sync cord to fire a remote flash.

If you camera lacks a way to sync with a remote flash, your options are more limited. You may be able to use an optical sensor to trigger a remote flash when it senses the light from your built-in flash unit. Many cameras, however, fire a pre-flash beam before the actual exposure. This beam is used to calculate exposure and focus. If this is the case with your camera, a generic optical trigger will not work, because the pre-flash will trigger the remote unit too early to have any effect.

Should you discover that you camera doesn't support remote flash in any way, then you won't be able to take advantage of off-camera flash. You can attempt to minimize the effects of on-camera flash by moving your subjects away from walls and adding extra tungsten light to reduce shadows.

If your camera will support moving the flash off-camera, don't hesitate to start using this technique. Once you see how much better your images look using remote flash, you will never go back to shooting with a built in or hot-shoe mounted flash.

A Review of Picasa - Free Management Software For Your Photos

What exactly is Picasa?

Picasa is free, software which you can download from Google which allows you to organise your digital photos, edit them, email or share them, and it is very easy to use.

You can find Picasa by typing "google picasa" in your search box and, if Google search is used, Picasa will be the first entry on the results page. You can download from there.

When Picasa is downloaded it will seek and will find all the pictures on your computer, including "My Pictures" and install and organise them in folders on Picasa

There you will see a list in the left-hand sidebar of the Library view which will show all the folders containing these photos. By default this list will be sorted by creation date, however this order can be changed.

In the main body of the screen will be thumbnails of all your pictures, sorted by Album so you can very easily scroll through all your photos.

Additional photos can be imported directly from your camera via USB cable, via a card reader, or by importing from a CD/DVD, a webpage, a PDF file, from GMail or other mail, a shared network device and even from a camera phone via normal transfer mechanism i.e. Bluetooth.

Photo file types that are compatible are JPG, GIF, TIF, PSD, PNG, BMP, RAW.

Movie file types: MPG, AVI, ASF, WMV,MOV.

Editing is easy and in most cases will tweak your photos sufficiently for most purposes.

When you double-click on "Edit photo" or the thumbnail, the photo will shown on the screen and editing can take place.

Editing options are as follows:

Crop, straighten, Red Eye, Auto Contrast, Auto Color, Fill Light, Fill light slider, Highlights slider, Shadows slider, Color Temperature slider, Neutral Color, Sharpen, Sepia, Black and White, Warmify,

Film Grain, Tint, Saturation, Soft focus, Filtered B&W, Focal B&W and Graduated Tint.

Quite impressive and this is something you can play around with to your heart's content and you can always back-track your last adjustment or all adjustments and start again!

Practice makes perfect and you can try different effects on your photos and eventually settle on a routine edit as I, and many others, have done.

Whatever happens your original photos will not be lost and can always be found on "My Pictures" as Picasa runs over the top of your saved pictures.

This software is used by many photographers, and depending how you wish to use your photos, can be sufficient for your needs and is very user-friendly.

For myself, I use Picasa to view and organise my photos, sometimes to share with friends via email or if the photo is special I can export it to my larger software, in my case Photoshop, for much more detailed adjustment.

Furthermore I can also copy to CD/DVD to have copies elsewhere than on my computer.

I use this, and I recommend Picasa, especially if you just want to tweak your photos in an easy way without getting too technical.

Good editing!

How to Win Photography Competitions

Entering photography competitions are a great way of improving your skills as a photographer. There are also great ways of making more money if you win and will help to build your name as a great photographer. But many images fail to meet the grade because of simple things.

The first and most important tip to follow is understanding the rules. Many photographers enter great images but seldom get placed. All competitions have a theme and the image that you are entering must follow this theme. To win any competition you must try to connect with the judges

The reason that companies hold so many different photo competitions is quite simple; they are looking for images that portray their business. So the first step is to do research on the company holding the competition. Find published material that the organisers are using.

We will all agree that reading material and competition rules will be very boring, but knowing the rules down to the final detail may help you in selecting what images to submit. Also some completions will have small print stating that images cannot be used by other companies. Lots of photographers get caught out and

The second most important item is that your image should be perfectly exposed, with vibrant colours. Lots of photographers submit images that are technical poor. These images have no chance of winning. If your image is poorly focuses or is lacking in colour it won't be placed.

The third item on the list that should be taken in consideration before you submit is the composition. Make sure every part of the image is perfect. Distractions in the foreground or anywhere else in the image will be ranked poorly.

The forth item and I would think the most important thing to do is to think outside the box. Be creative. Most competitions will get hundreds of well take images. Take a look at previous images that won the same competition as see where you can add an extra bit of something.

Remember that if you image is chosen as the wining shot it will be used by the orginazers for marketing. Your image should be capable of representing the company orginazing the photography competition.

Now you need to find photography competitions that are suited to the type of photography that interests you and start submitting. Photography competitions can do a lot for a photographers career - some say it's the taking part that counts - but with the large amounts of cash on offer, I think they are worth taking seriously.

5 Reasons to Edit Digital Photos

5 Reasons to Edit Digital Photos
By MJ Johnston

When you share digital photos, you may simply upload them to your digital photo album and send links to your friends and family to view. When your visitors arrive, they will be able to see whatever shots you have shared - including some that might have been better displayed if only they'd been edited before sharing. There are several great reasons to edit your digital photos before sharing them with your loved ones.

Reason #1: Limiting a Picture's Focus

Some of the pictures that you include in your digital photo album might be too "busy." Instead of focusing on one person or group of people, or documenting one event, they could be taking in too much action. These photographs may be hard to understand or not pleasant to view because there is simply too much going on at once. By editing your digital photos, you can instead focus on one part of the picture to share exactly the story that is the main idea.

Reason #2: Put Your Pictures Front and Center

Sometimes, the subjects of your photographs move just as you're taking a shot. Or you might think you're centered on a particular item, only to find that it's in the left corner of your picture instead of the main focus. You can edit your photos before including in your digital photo album in order to ensure that the main idea for your digital photo is displayed front and center in the shot.

Reason #3: You're Not a Werewolf

One of the biggest issues faced by photographers are the appearance of red eyes. Many film and digital cameras feature red eye reduction functions, but those do not always take care of the problem. You can use online or software based photo editing programs to reduce the appearance of red eyes in your photography so that your subjects look like humans instead of werewolves - red eyes are not the best way to show of your baby's baby blues or your girlfriend's smoky brown eyes. Instead, you can make easy edits to fix your photos before you share.

Reason #4: Size Matters

Sometimes, the perspective of your photographs may be a bit...off. You may have focused on one particular person or object, just to have them or it dwarfed by what is going on in the background of your shot. Instead of showing off a background, show off your main subject by cropping your photographs to show only what you want to show. Size does matter - when your subject is barely seen, you aren't showing off the story that you actually want to tell.

Reason #5: Clean it Up

When you are focusing on one particular person or object, you may not even notice what is going on the background. You can edit your photos to take out background objects that may not be quite what you want to show off in your pictures. You can either crop your photos to show only the main object, or you can use other editing features to remove portions of the photograph that may not be appropriate to share.

Print Your Photos on Canvas

While home printers and digital image editing software has advanced at an almost alarming rate, the printing of canvases is still not something the vast majority of us can do at home unfortunately. However, it is possible to have your photo printed on a stretched canvas using high quality materials and the latest printing processes - the end result is a great looking and entirely unique piece of canvas art for your living room or any other room in the home.

Framed prints have long been the item of choice for displaying family photographs. The variety in size of canvas prints means that they can be used to show off photos of individuals or the entire family unit while ensuring that the picture is recognisable and incredible looking. Extra large canvas prints can even be created on canvases of up to five metres in length or you can print a single image over the space of two or more canvases to create an artistic and unique look.

Multi canvas prints offer an even more unique but equally exceptional looking option. Triptych canvases are among the more traditional way to do this, using a row of three canvases to display one picture. While multi canvas prints may not be ideally suited to photographs of people (the gap between canvases has a tendency to cut through the people subject of the photo) they are perfect for landscape shots and panoramic shots.

You don't have to stick with the use of your photo in its original state either. Some canvas art services will work to convert or reproduce your image into black and white or by applying a selection of other artistic processes to them. Among the most appealing of these design options is the conversion of a standard image into a pop art representation of that image; a fun and unique way to proudly display your photo.

Send Bags of Love your photo, or photographs, and we will print them onto high quality stretched canvas prints. We can convert colour images into black and white, virtually any photograph into a pop art representation, or we can even create a photo montage of several of your pictures.

From a family photograph to a picture of your favourite holiday location, or even a picture of the car that you've been lovingly restoring for the past six years, any picture can be used to make a personalised canvas print.

With so much choice, the biggest problem can be making the right choice. How do you whittle twenty photographs down to just one? How do you accurately show give years of marriage in a single picture? Fortunately, there is a solution - a photo montage is basically a collection of those photographs combined into one single image or display and then printed onto a canvas print or any other personalised photo item.

A photo montage isn't just a great solution to picking the right photograph. Great looking montages can be created using a selection of pictures from a particular event such as a wedding or an engagement party. With the existence of so many digital cameras and mobile camera devices, you're almost certain to be inundated with pictures from any event. 3 Types of Photographs to Use on Canvas Art

Canvas art can be bought in most interior design and even DIY shops, but it can be very difficult to get the exact image you want. Personalised canvas art, on the other hand, allows for the use of the image or pictures of your choice so that the end result isn't just great looking canvas art but fully personalised and entire unique canvas prints.

Family And Friends

Pictures of family members and friends always make good, customised canvas art. Using quality woven canvas helps ensure that you enjoy the very best image reproduction, the clearest in colours, and the longest life from your canvas art. You can use photos of individuals or the entire family unit and canvas art of a newborn baby can be used to brighten up the room, display your favourite photos, and show off a newborn son or baby; the perfect keepsake as well as a beautiful piece of wall art.

Places

From your favourite holiday destination to the mountain that you finally beat last year, there are many different destinations that can make excellent canvas art subjects. You can even use a photograph of your own home, one of the new office building you're just bought, or a picture of your family home to help cheer you up when you feel homesick. Of course, there's nothing to say you need to have visited the place in order to enjoy displaying its picture on the wall.

Nature

Nature photographs and pictures can cheer up any room. They tend to add colour to a neutral room while natural items like plants, flowers, or even entire scenes of natural surroundings can encourage peace and harmony from the room and everybody in it; good looking and tranquil nature pictures are always popular when it comes to the creation of canvas art so why not choose your own picture with the colours that most suit your room and even your mood.

Bags of Love canvas art is an entirely unique type of canvas art because it can be customised completely to include the picture of your choice. From family to flowers and beaches to mountains you can display any picture you want on custom canvas prints to great effect.

Leading Lines

Leading Lines

Leading lines are everywhere. You see them on power lines, streets from above, train tracks, fences, and so on so forth. Finding lines and using them to your advantage is actually quite easy and can make very visually appealing photos. Lines can lead to the subject or show how cluttered a space is.

Leading lines are basically lines that lead to something. Quite simple, eh? Where these lines lead and/or intersect is where the viewer will focus the most attention to. So make sure that what the lines are leading to is what you want your photo to be most about.

The example I use is of a high school senior photo shoot. As we drove around the neighborhood, I encountered and intersection of two leading lines from this white fence. I placed her head at the intersection with a main leading line coming from the left and then trailing off into the distance. She intersects at the most important area, thus leading her to be the main focus of the photo. No matter how many times you look, your eyes will almost always lead back to her head.

Additionally, I had her place her left hand in such a position that it would eventually lead upwards with the post pointing up that also intersects. So, if you follow her art from her shoulder, it creates a "C" curve going back up to the main subject - her head.

This is one of those rather "simple" rules of photography that can help you to make your images all the more powerful. Give it a try!

And, I hope each of your roads are leading you to a wonderful holiday season.

Digital Camera Tips - How to Use to Your Digital SLR Camera Like the Pros

Using a Digital Camera is so much fun nowadays when compared to using a film camera. The benefit of reviewing the photo on the LCD is my favorite feature that I enjoy the most. The digital camera tips that I'm going to share to you will be primarily for Digital SLR camera users. But people using the point and shoot camera can benefit too because some of this tiny cameras are so much advancing that you can find some of the features of digital SLR.

My best advice for beginners who are in a budget is to try to buy a used Digital SLR camera in Ebay. That's where I bought my backup Camera a Canon 10D which I am still using. There are some flaws in it but for the most part it's still unbeatable in quality compared to most of the newer point and shoot cameras.

Here are some of the best digital camera tips I'm going to share to you according to my experience.

1) Avoid using autofocus in your digital SLR Camera. I know a lot of my fellow photographers will disagree with me but hey just try it, and you will see the difference. Just remember there's no more waste of film. We are living in a digital world. I mean you're using a sophisticated Digital Camera. The best camera setting is to use only one focusing point. This is especially helpful in doing closeup photography. But for sports I would recommend using autofocus.

2) Use the Manual Mode always in your digital SLR camera. Some will say, I got descent shots with full automatic mode, why should I switch in manual mode? But if you are going to try it you will surely discover that your photos will look more professional. But my advice is to learn first the basic function of your DSLR Camera. Read the manual of your camera or read some books related to using a digital SLR Camera.

3) My third digital camera tips is to experiment with using custom white balance in your camera. When I'm shooting indoors I sometimes encounter mixture of lights. Some restaurants use tungsten lighting and daylight. Using automatic white balance doesn't really work. I switch my camera to custom white balance and take a photo of a white wall or the white gown of the bride to base my white balance. This is the secret, try to lower your flash output to about minus 1 before you take a picture for the custom white balance. The result depends on different flash models and cameras. Try this and you'll be surprise with the result.

4) Avoid using direct Flash on your subject especially doing portraits. Either bounce your flash or use Gary Fong's lightsphere softlighting which I'll discuss soon. Some flash now have a bounce card that you can use to soften your light. This is a great feature.

As a competitive industry, the Toronto fashion world is a cutthroat business not only for photographers, but also for stylists, models, makeup artists and hairstylists will sometimes work without charge in place of digital images and prints for their own portfolios. The final output of the collaboration could be of high quality, but remember smaller teams count for fewer hassles. Being able to articulate one's vision verbally bodes well for the final product, through team cohesion.

Community posts aid immensely in getting word out, communicating details on the photography business, through online groups, photo labs and bulleting boards. This will help build important connections, as well as identify potential project opportunities, quality equipment, sales and studio rentals. It is also advisable to respect others, as down the road they might be of use for the advancement of one's fashion photography career. Toronto Schools of fashion design harbor young talent that is eager to be exposed and this can be a good area to source apprentices. The industries major players can at times be found at modeling agencies, along with their detailed profiles. Test shoots can also have models that are less experienced, as well as up, coming make-up, and hair artist.

Simple equipment loads are highly recommended, as some less experienced models may be intimidated at the sight of some equipment for instance, high-powered strobe lights. In the case where equipment needs troubleshooting, complicated setups could be detrimental to the task. Firstly, in one's fashion photography shoot, one needs some equipment for instance, a reflector disk, a tripod and a film or digital SLR camera may be adequate. The basics of lighting apply to daylight hours, where dusk and dawn are the most favorable times for flattering light. Midday shoots; yield facial shadows due to the harsh lighting. Shooting either later or earlier in the day and with the use of a fill light creating reflector, produces some favorable results.

Studio shots are inevitable, for one's fashion photography portfolio at least. The use of artificial lighting is sought after in some projects, so one's range will require one to rent some space. Compelling project narratives are best conveyed through a series of photographs and the inspiration may come from not only the fashion industry, but also the wider Toronto area.

Digital Photography Tips - How to Take Winter Photos

Digital Photography Tips - How to Take Winter Photos

Many people that have just started taking photographs have no knowledge that, when taking pictures of snow, the properties in their cameras are set to counterbalance the abundance in light that is reflected in the snow. Because of that, snow is captured as gray or blue instead of white. Fortunately, there are two solutions for this simple problem that frequently happen in the winter. You can change the setting to "beach" or "snow" mode and the camera will self-adapt to the bright light and fix the issue. The other solution is to manually manipulate the camera to recognize the snow as it should, while observing the effects through the LCD screen.

At the same time it is not easy photographing snow because of all the bright light, once you realize what you can do to overcome that problem, you are instantly blessed with breathtaking and exclusive images that you cannot obtain in any other season. There is usually such a striking difference in colors that make winter pictures unique and extremely attractive.

Whenever taking photos outside, photographers are usually confronted by some difficulties. One of them is when the picture ends up being too dark because the camera tries to compensate for the intensity of light. In this case, most people use the flash to help with the lighting. You can also choose the "action" mode to make sure that any moving subject is captured precisely.

There is such a wide variety of photographs that can be seen in winter photography. All the contrast and textures of nature are simply infinite.

Photography Marketing - 2 Simple Tools to Promote Your Photography Service Using Social Networking

Put Your Best Face Forward On Facebook - Facebook has become one of the most popular destinations for social networking on the web. When I first signed up for Facebook I'll admit I didn't do anything with my account for several months. Then I started hanging out on the site and wasn't long before I realized the potential networking possibilities that existed for connecting with other photographers and business professionals.

4 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Facebook:

1. Set up albums within your Facebook account to display your photography.

2. Provide links to your website, blog, links to your articles, classes you teach and other media coverage you receive.

3. Find and join groups, within Facebook offers tons of special interest groups that you can join and network directly with other like minded or like interest individuals

4. Register a custom URL (web address) for your Facebook page, think of it like a personalized license plate. You or your web designer can set this up through a domain registration service like Godaddy.com. The benefit of offering this short cut? It allows you branding capability for your business and makes it easier for visitors to find you. If you'd like to see an example in action you can send me a friends request at RodneyonFacebook.info

Follow Up With Twitter - Twitter is another social networking site that took me a while to get. Quite honestly I'm still learning more about Twitter and it's potential influence on my online marketing efforts. Basically Twitter is a "micro blog" where your text posts are limited to 140 characters. Now I realize that 140 characters doesn't seem like much but think of this way, when you're limited to how much you can say you'll find yourself getting to the point quickly.

When you 'Tweet' (their term not mine) you share a quick post about your current activities. So for example, if you teach photography workshops you can tweet about that, if you've just published an article to your blog or in print you can tweet about that and create an html link to the direct location where your content is stored.

Don't underestimate the power of Twitter, I'm already realizing the impact of this powerful site. You can follow me on Twitter by visiting the site and entering my screen name in the 'search for' RodWashington to follow my efforts as I connect with photographers, artists & other business professionals globally.

3 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Twitter:

1. Post frequently. Twitter's true power comes from the frequency of your communication. Basically the more you Tweet, the more the prospects you'll connect with.

2. Tie your Twitter feed to your Facebook account. Within Facebook you can have your Twitter posts display on your Facebook page without you having to log in manually to add your posts.

3. Tweet back. When you receive a new follow (another term for someone subscribing to your feed) send a short message in return. It's essentially the same as replying to an email. Whether online or off it's all about forming and maintaining relationships.

Remember no matter what you think of social networking, marketing your photography services online is fast becoming one of the most effective as well extremely affordable methods of prospecting and establishing new contacts. In addition if you tie your offline with your online marketing efforts your reach will grow even larger and become more effective.

Are You Looking For Photo Communities Online?

Are You Looking For Photo Communities Online?

As a photographer I can definitely appreciate and enjoy other people's work when it comes to any kind of art; not just photography. Recently I was searching online for some photography communities that I could get involved in and I found a few really interesting one's. These aren't regular image sites like that of Image Shack or Photo Bucket, but real communities where people can take their photos and post them online to share with other people.

The aim of these sites is it to categorize information in order to present typical impressions of a spot, of its nature, technique and industry, history, architecture and the people who are living there, allowing at the same time for a simple and intuitive access to the true gems of our surrounding world.

These sites are also terrific for the travelers out there because it also allows you to share places you have visited and share places you think other people would enjoy visiting. I signed up for an account and here is how it works. Simply upload any photos you might have (if applicable) and then add some information to the photos such as; category, title, spot, and external links. So it might look something like this:

Photo Image Here
Title Venice At Sunset
User yournamehere
Spot: Venice Italy
Categories: Italy, Rome, Sunset, Venice

Pretty easy stuff. Then, people can vote on your photo, view and even comment the photograph! It's all pretty simple but it really is an incredible site for those of us that really revel in our photography and like to see what everyone else is up to as well. This would be a terrific site to join up with if you were going on a worldly travel tour. You could take pictures like a photo journal of sorts of all the places you visited, ate at, stayed at, etc.

Right now these sites have worldly places listed on the site such as Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle America, Middle East, North America, Oceania and South America. Once you click on these countries you will then be taken to cities, towns and other locales within the country. So if I pick Middle America I can, then choose from Caribbean, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Belize.

Once you pick from those places (I'll pick Costa Rica) you are then brought to a map of the Costa Rican area along with some information about Costa Rica such as description, scenery, lifestyles, architecture, historical background and much more! Plus you will also see people's photos of Costa Rica if they are available. Really these are awesome sites to join up with, and why wouldn't you take advantage of something like this especially if it's free! I really hope you enjoy these sites and start placing your photos on them immediately! Have fun!
